Dr. Matilda Ertz is an instructor of piano and harpsichord at the University of Louisville Community Music Program. She is also a faculty member in music history at the School of Music where she teaches courses on Western Music, Rock & Roll, and American Popular Music. Dr. Ertz has performed and taught piano for over fifteen years, with students ranging from preschool to retirement, in locations from New York to Oregon. She has taught and performed on harpsichord since 2004.
As a harpsichordist, she is currently collaborating with harpsichordist William Carragan on recording the complete keyboard works of Johann Mattheson. She has performed in many concerts of Mattheson’s music as a guest artist including a fringe concert at the Boston Early Music Festival in 2005. Recently, Dr. Ertz has performed in Louisville’s “Here and Now” concert series, featuring new music for the harpsichord by local composers at 21C Museum, and at faculty concert at the University of Louisville. On keyboard, her performing interests range from early music to jazz to twenty-first century music and even bluegrass fusion.
As a musicologist, she studies and writes about music and dance, particularly ballet music from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She brings this experience and her love of music history and historical performance into private lessons, with the philosophy that musical performance and interpretation are only deepened by musical understanding beyond the score.
She has a PhD in Musicology from the University of Oregon with a supporting area in piano performance, as well as Master of Music Degrees in both Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She attended SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music for her undergraduate degree in Music Education with certificates in piano pedagogy and performance.
Dr. Ertz teaches private piano and harpsichord lessons, all ages and levels. She also incorporates jazz, pop and historical performance into private lesson curriculums for students, if desired. She incorporates music theory and improvisation as well.
