LOCAL PIANO STUDENTS TO STAR IN RECORD-BREAKING HALLOWEEN CONCERT EVENT
LEXINGTON, Ky., Oct. 26 – Kentuckiana piano students will once again unleash their horrific talent upon the innocent as part of Gist Piano Center’s fifth annual Halloweekend celebration. For the past two months, local music students have practiced their fingers to the bone and on Saturday, October 26th (at 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm 5:30pm, 7pm and 8:30pm), hundreds of Lexington area boos and ghouls will swarm onto stage at Gist Piano Center’s Harrodsburg Rd and Man 'O War location. Admission to this frightening display of skill will be FREE and the general public is welcome to attend… if they dare.
Featuring nine one-hour piano concerts spread out over two days, Halloweekend is the oldest and most popular event in Gist Piano Center’s history. In fact, the 2013 event will feature a record-breaking 220 student performers.
“Halloweekend offers our students and their families a fun and safe way to celebrate Halloween,” said John Gist. “We present a highly entertaining program with a spooky – but not scary – format that reminds Kentuckiana students and their families how fun and meaningful music making can be.”
Now in its fifth year, Halloweekend will feature a fully decorated – and professionally lit – stage as a spooky backdrop to the costumed student performances. Gist will also host a costume contest for Halloweekend performers on the Gist Piano Center Facebook page.
“Studies show that programs like this can help to improve student health, cognitive development and mental focus,” said Heather Hamilton, Director of Education for Gist. “Halloweekend actually helps remove the fear students feel when they play in front of a crowd. When you’re dressed up, you can be anyone!”
Gist Piano Center will present Halloweekend in Louisville on Friday, October 25 at 5:30pm, 7pm and 8:30pm. Gist Piano Center will present Halloweekend in Lexington on Saturday, October 26 at 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm 5:30pm, 7pm and 8:30pm Admission is free and open to all. Costumes are encouraged. Halloweekend is approved for all ages.
Halloweekend is the largest and most popular in a series of theme recitals designed by Gist Piano Center to give Louisville students fun and informal performance opportunities. “Piano study can be a lonely affair,” said John Gist. “Nothing motivates a piano student like seeing live performances by other students their own age. It’s important to give learners a fun and informal environment to play in.”
Participants in Halloweekend are members of Gist Piano Center’s Partners In Education Program (PIE). PIE is a collaborative effort between the local music store and Kentuckiana piano educators designed to enhance the teaching experience, to provide students with meaningful musical memories, and to give families the information they need to make good decisions regarding their child’s music education.
